| Description |
Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush's adaptation of Beaumarchais play. This interpretation is racy and postmodern, sly, topical and witty. The original version was banned in Vienna as being impertinent and subversive-it was felt to be an expose of the libertine excesses of a ruling aristocracy by the "serving classes".It was of course the play to which a young Mozart turned for operatic material in 1786. |
