| Description |
In the first p!ace the comedy was staged in the most perfect manner, the specially painted scenery and the splendid dresses combining to form a picture in admirable keeping with the poetic and sylvan theme. The first two scenes— Oliver's orchard and the Palace grounds— were excellent examples of Mr Spong's rare talent as a scenic artist, but it was the Forest of Arden, beautifully painted and most picturesque in every arrangement and detail, that took the audience by storm and led to tho artist being enthusiastically called before tie footlights. The dresses were handsome, appropriate, and effective, and although in this respect Rosalind outshone them all, the others were not sufficiently inferior to be incongruous or to mar the harmony of the general effect. When the characters were grouped together on the admirably appointed stage they formed a picture which for spectacular effect has seldom if ever been equalled in Invercargill. … |
