Set early in 17th century Stratford-Upon-Avon, this play is based on some scraps of historical fact surrounding Shakespeare's elder daughter Susanna. A public slander by one John Lane concerning an alleged adultery by Susanna with a local haberdasher Rafe Smith brought a successful charge of defamation against Lane in the diocesan court of Worcester Cathedral. |
