Description FROM THE DIRECTOR Aarne Neeme- The main theme of A Cheery Soul, in the playwright's own words is: "The sin of goodness...of militant virtue...how often do we pride ourselves on virtue? How often do we luxuriate in our own good deeds until they grow grotesque and ugly in other people's eyes?" The central character Miss Docker is an indomitable do-gooder, whose lack of sensitivity and self-knowledge cuts a swathe through the residents of the outer suburb of Sarsaparilla during the early 1960's. Her mission to give succour to one and all, is negated by self-serving and self-righteousness.
