This comedy by Alan Melville, adapted from Les Enfants d'Edouard, concerns three children of the charming Denise Darvel, well-known authoress and lecturer, who have looked upon the portrait of a handsome man hanging over the mantelpiece in their Paris home as their beloved father, Charles. When, however, two of them, Martine and Walter, suddenly announce their intention of marrying into a respectable middle-class family, Denise is obliged to shatter their illusions. It transpires that three men - an English baronet, a Polish pianist and a French business man - between them, are concerned with the secret of the children's parentage, and in this revelation much of the sparkling and piquant comedy occurs. The question is: does "Dear Charles" retain permanently his position of honours? |
